About Me

I’m Dan.

And I’m much better at writing about other people and their businesses, or about videogames and motorcycles than I am about writing about myself, which is why I’ll have to switch to the third person in a moment…

Dan Thornton Bio:

Dan Thornton has worked in digital content and marketing for more than a decade, and has worked with some of the UK’s largest media companies, and some of the most interesting small businesses.

After finishing a degree and experimenting with building his first websites using a 486PC and a dial-up modem, he began working for Emap (Now Bauer Media) on the Motorcycle News website, and was part of the award-winning team during 3 major re-launches.  Responsibilities due this time ranged from community management and arranging live celebrity web chats, building what was the largest product database in the industry, and eventually running the website editorial team. During this time the site saw consistent growth from around 500,000 users to more than 1 million uniques per month today.

During this period, he started experimenting with social media marketing, and along with Video Producer Angus Farquhar, launched RSS feeds, a daily Video newscast, and the MCN Youtube channel, which has reached more than 113 million video views to date.

He was then asked to become the first Community Marketing Manager at Bauer Media, which meant introducing both staff and readers to new brand channels, and how these could offer value and engagement. This role was across the company, with titles including FHM, Heat, Empire, Zoo, Cocosa, MCN, Car Magazine, Your Horse, and many more.

Seeking a new challenge, he then joined Absolute Radio as the first Digital Marketing Manager for the company, heading up all Social Media, Search Engine Optimisation and Mobile Application development, which saw a period of success for the company with digital growth, a number of new brand launches, and App downloads of more than 1.5 million.

Due to a young family and being based in East Anglia,  he then started his own Digital Marketing business, TheWayoftheWeb, which focuses on Content, Marketing and Technology. In the past two years this has grown from a one-man consultancy to employing a virtual team of specialists around the globe, and included a range of brands, including open source eCommerce brand Jigoshop.

In addition he also continues to experiment with niche digital publishing via the Hot Mod Media range of websites, which reach between 50-100,000 unique users per month, and also provides courses in digital journalism, publishing and marketing for organisations including PMA Media.

The unofficial version:

I’ve loved technology as far back as I can remember, and some of my earliest memories were my first encounters with computers and videogames. Getting a 48k Spectrum for my fifth birthday was just the start.

The biggest catalyst for me was discovering internet access and realising how it broke down the barriers for me to become a journalist and writer. I dabbled in personal websites before starting my employment with Emap, and continued to run my own sites.

I have a range of pop culture obsessions, including music, movies and comics. I also spend far too much time getting frustrated with videogames, especially since my reactions have started to get slower.

I also play guitar, love anything on two or four wheels, and am constantly amazed at the opportunities I’ve had throughout my career.
